Apple Airport Express and iTunes/AirPlay

Wireless g Airport Express? Defunct

As of Feb 2011 – Consider this:

  • Early Apple Airport Extreme Wireless G (802.11g) units do not work with the latest iTunes/Airplay – that’s why so many are for sale on ebay from folk who don’t declare this issue. These old units can only take firmware revision 6.3 or lower. Forums are currently replete with folk who are getting connection errors that relate to port and firewall (hard and soft) configuration
  • Apple UK sell refurbished Wireless 802.11n (latest) units for around £70 incl VAT which reputedly work fine with the latest iTunes
  • However….the new 2nd gen Apple TV is available for approx. £89 incl. VAT Uses only 6 watts of power and can be selected under iTunes/AirPlay as a remote speaker (N.B. it only has optical audio , SP-DIF out which can be converted to RCA out or mini stereo jack via a digital to analog converter if your Amp has no SPDIF support)

Rather than upgrade your Airport Express consider a 2nd Gen APPLE TV it can do a whole lot more. Unlikely eBay sellers or Apple will advise you to do so.
